2023 Writing and Art Contest for Kids

Welcome to the 4th annual Beverly Cleary literacy and family celebration! The writing and art contest opens April 12th in honor of Beverly Cleary's Birthday. Please read below to check out this year's story contest theme and color page. You have four weeks to write your fun story and color. Classroom teachers, homeschool or private schools all welcome to enter. Children K-12. Last year we had entries from TX, CA, OR, TN. WA.


This year's family friendly event kicks off at 10 am with a 5K race, Saturday, May 13th. You can join the race or just come for the fun after the race is done. R u n ! R o c k ! R e a d ! Runners can take in the scenic vistas and try to catch up to the Running Rocker, who will be shredding on an electric guitar while keeping an 8-minute-mile pace - and taking song requests along the route! Did you know, Beverly Cleary won a writing contest when she was young? We hope you enter and write a fun story too! Story Contest open to all ages K-12.


** Contests are open to any child in the USA. There will be prizes for Yamhill County residents and for children outside of our county. We welcome all children to participate!


Story Contest Theme: Write a story about a "Big Race!" Stories can be typed or hand written. Word counts may vary. Here is a story starter page to get you started.

Local Artist Scholarship of $150 - Yamhill Carlton High School Student, must be 12th grade.


Stories and art must be received by May 9th, 2023.


Prizes will be awarded for as many entries we can afford.

*Some prizes may only be for local participants.

Past prizes have been t-shirts, pizza, books, coupons, postcards, stickers, bookmarks, gift certificates. Guided field trips for classrooms.
