Annual Youth Writing Contest 2026

In honor of Beverly Cleary, "A Girl From Yamhill," it is time for the annual Youth Writing Contest hosted by volunteers in Yamhill. Each year one of her characters is chosen to highlight and inspire a story writing contest. Henry Huggins is this year's character! Henry Huggins was her first book written in 1950.

When Beverly Cleary was young, she entered a writing contest and won a prize! Enter a story by May 31st, 2026 and you could win a prize too!

Kimberly Howell, a local illustrator created the Color Page Contest for grades K-4. Download Color Page Contest HERE.

This fun project began as a dedication to our town's notable children's author with the goal of inspiring youth in the community to write, read and enjoy local history. It has creatively grown each year with the help of grants and generous donors. As a teacher and a big fan of Beverly Cleary, I jumped at the honor to be part of the Beverly Cleary Committee of Yamhill. It has been a wonderful experience sharing the love of story with community and youth. Since our contest and events keep growing, we are establishing a new non profit to meet more outreach and open possibilities. We are working on a new website; The Yamhill Valley Children's Literature Project which we will be announcing soon our goals and events.
